1. How old is the Randsburg General Store?
The R.G.S. Was originally established in 1896.

2. How old is Randsburg?
The township of Randsburg was established in 1897.

3. Where is the restroom?
The public restroom is located directly behind the County Park picnic area 1/2 block east of the Randsburg General Store.

4. How many people live here?
There are approximately 80 who live in Randsburg and 450 if you include Johannesburg and Red Mountain.

5. What is there to do and see here?
Randsburg includes the downtown area, museum, various shops, County Park, uptown area and it’s shops, Santa Barbara Catholic Church, Methodist Church, Consolidated Mill, Big Butte Mine.

6. What was mined here?
Gold was discovered in Randsburg and Johannesburg in 1895 and has been mined ever since. Red Mountain mined silver and tungsten was mined in Atoll.

7. Can we visit the mines?
Sorry. All of the mines are on private property and due to the dangers, trespassing is NOT allowed. You can, however view the mines from a distance.

ABOUT RANDSBURG

1. Where do the local children go to school?
There is a one room school in Johannesburg for children up through 3rd Grade. Older students are bused to Ridgecrest, which is our nearest large town.

2. Where is the nearest gas station?
There is a Texaco station and mini-mart located on Highway 395 in Johannesburg (2 miles from Randsburg).

 

3. What cell phone services work here?
AT&T works in Randsburg and Johannesburg, Verizon works in Red Mountain.

4. Do you get a lot of tourists?
Randsburg is a tourist town. Besides being a favorite lunch stop for folks traveling north and south on HWY. 395, Randsburg is a destination/turnaround for groups of Harley riders out of the LA basin, and European tourists. The area is also surrounded by some of California’s best off road trails that are popular with riders of off road motorcycles and quads.

5. When is Randsburg’s busy season?
Due to the heat, Summer is the slowest season of the year. Fall and Winter are the busiest followed by Spring.

6. Have any movies been filmed in Randsburg?
Many movies and TV commercials have been filmed in the Randsburg area. Most are low budget but some feature films were also made here, including “Hidalgo” filmed in the desert south of Red Mountain, “Nevada” staring Kirsty Alley, “The Brave” staring Johnny Depp (foreign release only), “Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town” starring Billy Bob Thorton
